I am a private person so this has been a stretch for me. I really like the thought that having a strong digital presence will help me connect to many different networks in my life all the while realizing that I will give up some of my cherished privacy by being so "out there" in the cloud.
I began by developing a professional website using About Me. About Peggy Werness
Once I had that up and running, I then began to blog. Blogging has never been something to which I have felt a strong attraction but I found that once I began, I really enjoyed it. Although I have not posted more than a handful of times, I got more satisfaction each time. I found topics that I really had strong feelings about and worked hard to articulate those feelings without being too wordy. I don't really have a following yet but I think that it will be a fun challenge to seek out people that will read my blog and comment on it. I like the features that Blogger has to help you track your following.
The next steps were to clean up my Glogster and to connect all my social and other networking sites: Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and the Teaching and Technology web page.
Another on-going undertaking in my 20% project has been continuing to read and check out suggestions on my favorite technology-related teacher blog: Free Technology for Teachers (written by Richard Byrne). I think this will be really useful as I begin course number four of the Cohort, Emerging Technology and Trends.
Finally, I began a long project of transferring dozens of paper-and-pencil French reading comprehension quizzes that my colleague and I created for our Student Learning Goal to quizzes using Google Docs. I am very excited about the added benefit of using Flubaroo to do the correcting for us!

I cannot believe how far I have come since beginning the Cohort nine months ago. My confidence with technology has grown exponentially. I can see myself standing in front of my colleagues, many of whom are very tech-savvy and being able to share things that I have learned since beginning this journey. I do not consider myself an expert by any means, but I do see that I have knowledge and skills to impart that can serve to bring us all a bit further down the road of integrating technology in the classroom. It is a road which is evolving at a rate that is dizzying and sometimes even frightening and this is why we need to pool our knowledge and skills or our students who are so completely immersed in twenty-first technology will easily "lap us" as we move together on the track. I am thrilled to be able to say that I am beginning to meet standard 5 of the ISTE standards (ISTE standards for teachers 2008)
This standard focuses on Engaging in Professional Growth and Leadership
"Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. " The Cohort has provided me with a local and global learning community where it is feels safe to explore technology to enhance my professional practice. As a Cohort, we pooled our knowledge to partcipate in shared decision-making as our district looks toward a technology referendum in the near future.
As teachers and administrators, we took time to explore available digital tools to see what might be the best fit for the learners in our classrooms.

It is incredible to see how much we have accomplished together!
I really appreciated the time to "play around" with some programs that I have been interested in, but just can't seem to find the minutes in the day to explore. I worked a bit with Skype and thought that it might be fun to use this to connect with music classrooms around the country. I know many teachers in other states that may be interested in setting up some sort of exchange concert, and I will look into this further next year. I also worked with Prezi and xtranormal. Since I was not teaching this past semester, I tried these programs out with my 5th grade daughter's Gettysburg Address presentation. Here is a link to that presentation. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica", "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%;">http://prezi.com/1xhb3fpmqjkh/the-gettysburg-address/
Mike helped me start on Aviary and I spent some time exploring the audio recording part of this site. I was able to record my daughter playing two different parts on her frnech horn, sync them together, and delete some of her extra beats to help the two parts fit together. Here is a link to this recording.
I chose this goal because as a teacher I had witnessed great value using technology to communicate with students. I was curious about how these benefits might transfer to student-student relationships. I focused on using Moodle , Google Forms and shared Google Docs both in the classroom and for collaborative homework assignments. The students I work with are in 6th grade, and they made huge progress in collaboration via technology over the course of the semester. While all students certainly don’t agree, I am comfortable stating that the majority of the students found great value – and added facility – in collaborating with students using shared tech platforms. During the 4th quarter, students were able to complete a project start to finish without ever getting together outside of school. The project included collaborating on a script, editing the script, illustrating, annotating, and recording. I saw students writing notes, reminder and questions to each other in the shared doc, emailing reminders (they even copied their teacher on these, as I had asked that they “share” their document with me as well as their group members), and engaging in discussions and “chat” functions of Google Docs as they worked. It was really great to avoid forgotten jump drives and frustrated emails stating that the after-school schedule doesn’t allow group work until after the (name your activity) season! It was absolutely fantastic to see students communicating to each other about their ideas, work in general, and quality of French in particular.

It is clear I grew in many ways as I reflected on and tested ways for students to collaborate via technology. I love the flexibility the shared documents offer my class, in particular how this format facilitates developing student-centered learning opportunities. (Resource: shared template for students.) Once students had shared their group document with me, I could effortlessly provide feedback that was both specific and thought-provoking. Instead of asking students to research one specific topic, or explore a common question, I was able to ask a question of the group that would result in discussion on their part in order to move forward. This means the students themselves are making choices about how and what they are learning, but within the parameters I’ve set out. I had periodic checkins with each group, during which we sat together and viewed the shared document together on one screen. I used this opportunity to talk with students about the benefits of Google Docs, and how it can help them when doing group work. It was very interesting to share the “revision history” with students. I saw both looks of relief and also uncomfortable realization as this data-gathering tool was introduced! There were many opportunities to encourage groups to establish their next step(s) when it seemed the group was struggling or didn’t have a clear vision. Thanks, Google Docs! Here are some photos of the various collaboration activities students engaged in during their time in my class.

We completed a project with a partner classroom during the last part of the school year. It was a service-learning project, which means our fist task was finding out what our partner classroom’s authentic need was. The teacher send us a letter asking for our help, so we knew the overall project was going to entail writing stories for 2nd grade immersion students. (Click here for resources: unit plan and final projects from our first attempt.) Aside from that, we didn’t really know what to write, how to write, etc. When I asked the students how we could find out what stories would interest 2nd graders, or what challenges they fact when learning to read in a foreign language, they immediately said “we need to ASK them!” So, we wrote questions in small groups! Then we revised our questions, in order to make sure they were written in a way that allowed 2nd graders to respond with good information (checklists and items to choose from instead of writing answers, for example). We send the Google Form to two classrooms, and the very next day had results to analyze. This information allowed groups to write stories that were interesting to 2nd grade students and were linked to the 2nd grade teacher’s needs as well. This relatively simple activity allowed my students furthered their skills by focusing on question formation, writing for a purpose, and analyzing data. It started our service-learning project off with a bang! Here's a link to one of our surveys, and the summary of the data.

The work we completed on a weekly basis for the tech cohort fit in nicely with my 20% project, so I didn’t need to do much searching on my own to find current research on digital tools and resources that support student learning. I have added many resource sites that have been highlighted in this class to my Diigo list so I can easily find them in the future. I have also added RSS feeds for several blog sites to my Google Reader. As Will Richardson says, I am letting the computer do my research for me! Reading focused postings on a tried and true tools, with no more effort than opening Google Reader, makes the huge quantities of information manageable.
Teaching & Technology Cohorthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10916857075163362778noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869245602789284992.post-88975602961798288552011-06-14T22:16:00.000-07:002011-06-15T06:24:51.473-07:00Chad Schwartz's 20% Project1) My main goal of my 20% project was to increase my digital footprint. I think I accomplished that goal and have set a foundation in place to take what I have started even further. First of all, becoming part of the Twitter community has put me in contact with numerous professionals not only in my field of Physical Education, but also many people that have great ideas on how to incorporate technology into education. I feel the more I learn, the more I can pass on to colleagues.

I have also created a unit into a moodle course. This was a gigantic undertaking as I was starting from nothing. This year I had about 120 7th graders analyze their fitness tests and create a plan as to how they could improve those scores. Moodle provided a great way to integrate technology into the PE classroom.

I have also been fortunate to get an Ipad through the Ed Fund grant. Much of my time has been spent learning how to use the ipad and searching for apps that could be used in the PE classroom to enhance student learning.

Perhaps the part that I wish I had more time to spend on was creating a google site for all the things that I do to help kids learn. Both from my classroom and outside of the school day.

Overall, I feel that the 20% took up more of my time than the class itself. I've learned so much in so little time, it's now time to put that knowledge into practice.

2) Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments-Considering that I had no technology in my classes to speak of at the start of the year I feel that I have really made a head-first jump into it. The fitness plan through moodle gave me the opportunity to provide feedback instantly and get healthy conversations going about what makes a good fitness plan.

Model digital-age work and learning- By using twitter, moodle, and a host of other sites/apps, I was able to more clearly show information in a more technological way. The use of Moodle also helped me demonstate to the students that I knew what I was doing and was able to help steer them in the right direction for questions they might have had
A driving force behind this change is the change in my teaching area for next year; instead of 4 Reading sections and 2 LA sections, I will have 4 LA sections while teaching just 2 smaller Reading Lab classes.

If you were to read my last blog entry, you would see the focus was on increasing the amount of reading students in my class are able to do digitally - using their Nooks, Kindles, iPads and Smartphones to get kids not excited about reading interested in books, and increasing the amount of conversation kids have about books in my classroom.

My goal now is to take that same spirit and apply it to digital writing projects with my LA students next year. All of my students will start their own blog using Edina Apps, evolving from simple daily posts in the beginning to more advanced collaboration and reflection, using RSS feeds for news & info gathering, embedding photos and videos, and linking to important/influential research and articles.

A larger end goal is with the PBL developed for this class: students will conduct research and develop and publish a persuasive essay (of some form) to help solve a problem in today's world, whether it be local, national, global, cultural, societal, environmental, etc. This will lead to the 2nd part of every students' digital writing project...

For their final persuasive 'essay,' students can have their work be in the form of:

-writing (to be published old-school and online)
-Glogster
-Photostory and/or Smilebox production - especially if photography is key to their research/issue
-podcast
-video production
-other approved and/or appropriate forums...the form chosen may well depend on who the final intended audience happens to be!

I am excited and nervous for both the implementation of the 20% project and how it will eventually tie in to the PBL.Teaching & Technology Supina's 20% Project Part II
For my 20% project for this course I worked on several smaller projects based on my needs that particular week. One week our students were starting their unit on ancient Rome so I hunted around for short video clips that would enhance my lessons. I found several on the History Channel website and linked them to my video resources google doc. The following week I created a Google Doc based on my SchoolView training. Then I worked on creating some Quizlets and found video resources for a reading lesson based on NASA’s trip to Mars.

My final weeks of my 20% project were spent developing a summer reading program for my 6th grade reading students. I wanted to come up with a way to encourage them to read more than 8 books over the summer. I started by finding resources at the local Hennepin County Libraries that might appeal fo my 6th graders. Then I searched reading blogs to see if a reading blog would be a fit for me. After looking through several reading blogs, I created my own summer reading blog that would track my reading goals and progress. I introduced this blog to my students during the last week of school and so far I have almost 100 views on the blog. So someone is checking to see if I am going to reach my goal of 15 books this summer! I hope that the blog is a reminder to keep finding great books over the summer.

Through my 20% project I showed that I am able to “develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own goals” (NETS*T #2). Students developed their own reading goals based on books that fit their personalities and interests. Through my blog they will have access to resources that will hopefully enhance their summer reading and keep them working towards their goals.

Throughout my 20% work I continued to hunt for video resources that would enhance my current lessons. I found short video clips based on both Rome and Sojourner’s trip to Mars. There were several videos available for both of these topics, but I spent quite a bit of time analyzing the purpose of each video resource. NETS*T Standard #3 explains that teachers need to “locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning”. I believe that by adding in short video clips it helps all learners gain a better understanding of the topic, especially students that are not coming into the lesson with any previous knowledge.

NETS*T Standard #4 pushes teachers to engage in professional growth and model lifelong learning. I think that my reading blog exhibits my growth in this area. My students see me as a reader and throughout the year we had numerous great conversations about our goals as readers. Through my blog, students will be able to keep tabs on my reading goals and progress. I hope that this shows them that learning doesn’t stop the first week in June. They are still readers over the summer and so am I.
Teaching & Technology Zielund 20% Project Part 2Working with a visual language as opposed to an auditory one poses different challenges to teaching. How can one study the vocabulary of a three-dimensional language in a two-dimensional book? Video, of course! So, line-up kids and check-out your worn-out, has-been, scratched-up vocabulary DVD. Wrong! This is 2011. We have “the internet” now. This ain’t your Grandma’s internet either! This is the high-speed, mega-bandwidth, wireless kind! Sorry kids. You can go back and sit down. Get out your “smart phones” and point your browser to Facebook. You heard me right! Facebook. Find Edina HS ASL and LIKE it please. There you will find videos of fellow ASL students and some interesting/educational videos posted by your teacher.

They are the newest books added to the 12th grade reading list? No. Names of country songs? Wrong again…give up? They’re popular YouTube videos! Ok, ok, maybe these videos are a bit pointless, but they are the embodiment of the 21st century learner. Thankfully, luckily, fortunately, YouTube is not solely permeated with videos of adorable teddy engaged in sternutation. YouTube has lots to offer! The aforementioned vocabulary videos, vlogs, songs in sign, narratives…. These are just a few. All have been used to enrich learning. And since I wish to embody the 21st century teacher so that I may reach the YouTube generation, I have created my very own YouTube channel. It’s not much, yet: just a chair in the corner next to a floor-lamp, but I’ve got big plans for it! A nice couch (leather, of course), a colorful area rug and some flowers will brighten the space up. It can evolve, expand. That’s the nice thing about a room in virtual space. I can just keep adding furniture to it. mzielund's YouTube channel here.

In Part I of my project I worked to learn screen casting and created an opportunity for my students to create screen casts teaching a topic in math that was difficult for them to learn. It was a great learning experience for all. This course, I focused on finding screen casting resources to put on my website for students & parents to use when working on math at home. I get a lot of feedback from parents that they would like to know "how" I am teaching a concept. The curriculum we use does not provide a parent handbook or Student Reference Book; so I think this website will be a good resource for students to use when they need to review a topic. Here is a link to the website of links: https://sites.google.com/a/apps.edina.k12.mn.us/gifted-education-services-at-concord/home/student-links/screencasts

The main standard I believe my project met was:

2. Students are assessing their own progress by determining which videos they need to watch and how many times they need to view any one specific video before moving on to their independent practice. In addition, this was an example of me designing an authentic learning experience using contemporary tools. In the future I hope to create some of my own screen casts of lessons I am giving in the classroom.

My objective with the 20% project this time was to create a Moodle that would have the resources available for the themes and stories we cover in 6th grade reading at Valley View Middle School. At first I thought this task was not going to be too time intensive, but as I began working on the project I found that the project took more time than I had anticipated. My hope with the resource Moodle is that students (and parents) will have a place they can go to for additional information or to explore some more with a story that we have covered in class. I am thrilled with the outcome of this project, but I would like to tweak the links that I have for some of the videos.

2. I think that the resource Moodle I created will help students to search more about a subject and pursue their own curiosities. I also am optimistic that students will have a site they can reference if they were absent and need to get notes from a particular lesson. Students will have an opportunity to practice a skill a bit more, too.

In the last story of our final theme I was able to incorporate a three-point comprehension assessment, so this is a summative assessment that will allow students immediate feedback on their comprehension of the story (6.6.4).

As my students read through the different stories of the themes next year it is my hope that I can continue to add more resources to the resource Moodle. It would also be beneficial to seek input from the students as to what works well with the resource Moodle and what needs to be improved to make this a more valuable site.

Here's a Jing screen shot of what my project looks like:

After thinking about what I wanted to spend time with for my 20% Project, I continued to come back to the idea of using Moodle in my math class. I was nervous to get started because I don’t know hardly anything about it, and it would probably take me a long time to figure things out which means FRUSTERATION for me. I ended up finding out there are TONS of resources on the web as long as you know what you are looking for and how to make informed decisions on what is good and what isn’t. The topics below are what I worked on to accomplish a better presence on Moodle.

1.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Students entered data on a Google form and I was able to grade and see trends very fast – looking for ways to connect the Google forms to Moodle.

2.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Learning about Moodle as a teaching tool for next year – explored Moodle created sites, found out there isn’t TONS on middle school math.

3.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> How to write Math on Moodle – for me and students, writing equations, fractions, and using different math symbols

4.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Diigo for resources in class and what I can use on web site and Moodle – I was getting tired of trying to organize them myself…

5.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Interactive math manipulative to use with sections on Moodle – WOW so much out there and GOOD stuff too. I hope to incorporate more of these tools as I start working though different lessons on Moodle.

6.<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Putting things together between Moodle and Website – making decisions on what to use for instruction and what to use for student resource.

These projects connect hand to hand with the three standards. First, designing digital-age experiences and assessments connects to the different quizzes and forms I created through Google Forms and Moodle course. Students monitor their own learning by retaking quizzes in Moodle and getting feedback on how they are doing after each quiz or lesson.

Students see me as a digital teacher. Some of the lessons will require them to watch lessons from teachers online. After researching for the best interactive lessons on plotting numbers on the number line, students will have the best lesson I know how to present to them. Each benchmark will be shown through different media and students will show what they know through the different media.

Finally, as I am learning more and more about how to become a better teacher, I try to surround myself with like peers. My Diigo account links me into a network of teachers and resources from around the world. Sharing ideas and resources allows me to bring the best practices to my students.

I love the 20% Project because it allows teachers to create, define, explore, and learn about the different avenues they find important and useful for their teaching and the students in the classroom.

This seems to be my classic style of approaching technology (which sometimes leads to none of the items getting accomplished!) This time, however, I feel that I've hit on a couple things that are going to be able to be implemented next year into my classroom and then built on in successive years.

Initially, at the suggestion of Mike Walker, I took a look at the website www.cybernations.net as a focus of my Project Based Learning endeavor. Cybernations is an intriguing site which allows the user to design their own nation while taking a multitude of factors into consideration: government system, economics, society, military, resources, and culture to name just a few. It is very involved and very time consuming but I think it poses some real possibilities for use in class. Our first unit of the year - in many ways our most important unit - covers this very same information and I've been looking for ways to make it more interactive over time.

I can see Cybernations being used in two main ways. First, it may appeal to a certain segment of students individually as an enrichment opportunity. For those students who are true gamers or have an intuitive knack at "Risk" type simulation games, this game is perfect. It requires a fair amount of high level thinking, reasoning, and imagination. Secondly, I think it could be used in a group situation where one group designs a nation and periodically updates and makes decisions on the nation. It could even be something that I assign at the beginning of the year and the students play for the rest of the year with time given periodically in class and also assigned out of class.

This is a shot of my nation on cyber nations ... still in its infancy.

I've developed my own nation on Cyber Nations, but still have a LONG ways to go in really figuring out the ins and outs of the program. For example you'll notice I don't have an army yet, which could be a problem in time! Next school year, my plan is to introduce it to a select group of kids who demonstrate the need for an enrichment opportunity - those who exceed the standard on our first mid-unit formative assessment. I hope to see how they use it and tinker with how I use it - hopefully expanding to more students the following year.

The next chunk of time I used on the 20 percent project was creating a social media presence for my US Government class. In doing this I created both a Twitter account (@MrAndersonGov) and a Facebook fan page "MrAndersonGov." Originally, I was just going to create the Twitter feed, but a Social Studies teacher that I follow on Twitter suggested Facebook as a better platform since more kids are on Facebook and it allows for more features. But, I then learned that I could link the two together so that a Facebook post appears in the Twitter feed. So, I'm going to start with the two and see how it goes. I am very excited to explore the use of these resources for disseminating information and for extending the classroom walls of my class. However, I also want to think about whether this is something that might all just be better accomplished using Moodle. In the end, I want this to be valuable for kids but I don't want to kill myself doing it.

My plan with Twitter and Facebook is to use the features it provides to make my class better. I don't want to socialize, I don't want to debate, and I don't want to place myself in any uncomfortable situation. So, I want to spend time with the district policy and clearly lay out expectations to my students if they follow the Twitter feed or become a fan of the Facebook page. But, I think it presents wonderful opportunities to expose students to information and ideas that go beyond what we can do in class.

In looking at the ISTE standards, I think that I really hit on these two:

b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.

d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning

The use of Twitter and Facebook pages -or even if it ends up using similar features on Moodle-does exactly what is stated in (B). Students will become more active participants setting their own goals and managing their own learning. The interactive nature of Twitter and FB I think will allow me to pique student interests and trigger student discussions that I would not be able to do within the traditional classroom setting.

To achieve a success in part B, I will definitely need to work on part D. I am shocked at how poorly students navigate the online world right now. I plan on modeling appropriate online usage of these tools and lay out clear standards for students who wish to contribute to either site. In addition, the cybernations game has an interactive component where you are competing with thousands of others. In my two weeks on the game, I've already received multiple emails from other competitors. Teaching students how to properly and safely negotiate these online contacts would be vital.

Teaching & Technology Cohorthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10916857075163362778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869245602789284992.post-20527973219089953472011-06-14T09:31:00.000-07:002011-06-14T09:31:07.597-07:00Mary Howe 20% Project Part III have been overwhelmed with papers and electronic files all over the place. I teach in multiple classrooms in multiple buildings, and I have computers in different places as well as my laptop at home. Some of this mess was created because the curriculum has changed, but also I have been revising how I approach different chapters over the past several years. As a result, I have various copies and versions of different worksheets, notesheets, powerpoints, tests, etc. My goal was to organize both paper and electronic files and consolidate everything. It has been a monumental task, and I cannot claim victory yet, but I have accomplished a great deal! At least one building is completely organized and I have only a few chapters left at the other building. As for electronic files, I have made sure to add all my worksheets, notesheet, powerpoints, etc. to my google page, so even though I still have some work to finish up on the H drive and R drive, I do at least have one place where all my files are organized and up to date. I have also been organizing things on my laptop at home, adding things to the google page from home, deleting files, and saving things to a flashdrive. After a few scares about the S drive and the R drive being accidentally deleted, I will sleep more soundly knowing I have copies of everything saved, stored, and organized! It will also be helpful in sharing materials with the new teacher next year.

I have been struggling this year with how much I can expect students to be responsible for their own materials. I teach 6th through 9th grade, so I cannot expect the same level of independence across all these grades. I have wondered, though, given how comfortable students are with technology, and how much they are expected to use technology for all their classes, how much I can expect them to access what they missed when they were absent, print off copies of lost or forgotten papers, etc. Organizing all of my files has made it much easier for me to share with students electronically all the classroom resources. I hope that creating the google page and making available to students all the resources we have used in class and for homework has encouraged them to take a more active role in their education. I have also found it easier to share with them websites for projects and research. Since everything is in one place, they seem to be more willing to go to the google page, and they know where to look to find information.

NETS*T standard 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning: "model and facilitate effective use of current emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support and research and learning"
NETS*T standard 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: "develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress"

My project was mostly a housekeeping project, but now that I am organized and have a better idea of how to store my files for easier access, I have been more willing to explore other avenues for students to submit work, like the Z drive. I have several projects from this year now saved so I can show examples of projects to students next year, or even just have students look at, evaluate, translate, or expand on past projects. My goal was to spend time learn many new different web 2.0 tools and trying to use them with my students. I played around with glogster and had my students create character posters for a book we read in class. I also spent some time learning more about how to use Window's Movie Maker and had more success this year because I had time to learn how to save everything correctly so that the program works properly.I had my students create hero poems using Voice Thread and also created a video called "In 3 Words" to sum up our school year. The last thing that I had the students do was to create a portfolio to show all the technology projects that they have done this year. The link to the portfolios is below. I had a great time playing around with all these tools and feel that I have become more efficient in using many of the technology tools that are out there.
The 20% project allowed me to become more efficient in the NETS*T standards. I had more opportunities to design and develop digital learning experiences for my students. I was able to spend more time perfecting the lessons which allows me to be more effective in modeling and facilitating the use of digital tools. I feel that this self-directed time inspired me to be more creative in my use of technology in the classroom. Because I had to write in a journal each week, I had to stop and reflect on my use of technology and how effective it was. I got to think how I could improve my practices as a teacher. I am continually learning more about how to use technology more effectively and am continually coming up with new creative ways to inspire my students with technology.Teaching & Technology Cohorthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10916857075163362778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869245602789284992.post-27463493610133280432011-06-13T21:40:00.000-07:002011-06-15T07:56:34.869-07:00Kany Seck's 20% Project Part IIDuring the first class, we had to list all the assessments we use in class with our students. That activity was a true eye-opener. I realized that there was not much variety in the assessments we used. I decided to devote my 20% project on diversifying the assessment tools I used. I changed some of the reading evaluations to Google form and even added Flubaroo for easy grading. One of the biggest successes I had was creating a reflection sheet that my students used after the math end-of-unit evaluations to explain the challenging items on the test and why they did not have the correct answer. This was very empowering to students. Instead of copying the correct answers, they actually spent time figuring out why some of the items were difficult for them. I had my last Alt Comp observation during this class and presented a lesson related to my 20% project. I had students "sponsor" questions from the MCA3 Item Sampler and present their question to the class during my observation. They not only had to solve the problem but they also had to justify their choice and show that the other options were wrong. This was a perfect opportunity to showcase how to establish a culture for learning which was the focus of the observation.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;"> Throughout the course I decided to work on creating two moodle courses...one for my Language Arts course and one for 9th grade Advisory teachers. The reason I chose to focus on moodle for my 20% is because throughout the school year I found myself saying many times, "if only I had started with moodle linking this assessment or project would have been so much more efficient". My progress throughout the course on my 20% came with the theme "slow and steady wins the race" I was doing a lot of trial and error. For my advisory course I wanted to make sure I created an outline of what would happen day by day throughout the school year. By doing this teachers would have an easy way to access a schedule for advisory. Furthermore, I wanted to add resources and information for teachers regarding the "middle school" philosophy and perspective behind having an effective advisory program. Halfway through the course I realized trying to create two moodle courses was going to take much more time than I thought. So I spent most of my time working on the advisory course. I did begin an introductory activity for students on my Language Arts course page but all in all most of this work will be continued over the summer. I am happy with my accomplishments and have a great foundation for each course already started because of this 20% project. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">See screen shots of work here! <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;"> Since I created moodle courses for teachers and students I do feel that is a springboard that will allow students to become active in their goals within a technology enriched environment. Specifically I spent some time adding resources and an activity on the advisory moodle course that talks about goal setting and creating SMART goals. Students will be encouraged to explore goal setting throughout the resources I have provided online. I think the way students learn about SMART goals through the advisory resources and moodle course (a technology lens) is relevant and will positively impact student experiences.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;"> In order for students to explore and utilize technology it is important for them to have an avenue that provides experience with technology. The beginning of the year moodle quiz I put together throughout my 20% project will start the year off with students jumping right into the technology experience. I am modeling using technology to communicate and learn about one another by creating a moodle course that solicits information from students. I will access this information and put it into another web tool presentation to further demonstrate how one avenue of technology allows one the ability to utilize and take yet another avenue in the form of technology. As I provide experiences within moodle and other web tool presentations students will see in action how digital age work and learning presents itself through their teacher.<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;"> By working on my moodle courses I have been able to reflect a lot as a professional. I am continuously monitoring and adjusting as a teacher. By utilizing moodle I believe I will be more efficient in my monitoring and adjusting and thus continue to be a reflective and relevant educator. This 20% project put me in the shoes of my students when it comes to trying out new technology. There has to be room for trial and error along with time to reflect and restructure as needed. By continuously working on my moodle courses I believe I have allowed and will continue to allow for continuous and relevant improvement in my courses. I do believe my experience, as the "student working with new technology" will help me plan differently as I embrace technology with my students. I will allow the growth curve to take place in their learning just like I was allowed to grow. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-weight: normal;">
Teaching & Technology Cohorthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10916857075163362778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869245602789284992.post-85517144127379779292011-06-13T12:27:00.000-07:002011-06-16T08:33:41.939-07:00Stephanie Werner's 20% Project Part II

I was awarded a grant from the Edina Education Fund to purchase two iPads. Fortunately I received the iPad before the end of the school year so I had some time to put into action what I had researched to attain the grant. I also did more research using twitter as well as the internet to find how other educators are using the iPad in their classrooms. I then spent some time downloading various apps relevant to PE. I downloaded iMuscle, Coach Whiteboard, Burstmode, and Jot. I used Coach Whiteboard while teaching ninth graders football plays and to better explain the positions and their “jobs” in football. I also used Burstmode to film students batting. I then played it back to them frame by frame. The last app I used with students is iMuscle. We were talking about ankle sprains and what is involved when someone sprains an ankle. I opened the iMuscle app and showed the students exactly what tendons and ligaments are involved when an ankle is sprained. The iPad has made teaching more exciting and it is rewarding to see how the students respond when technology is present! I have always struggled with how to work with my students who are above-level readers and part of my chapter book enrichment group. In the past I have tried to meet with them and do literature discussions about the books or have them respond in a journal. This has gone by the wayside with RTI and not having all of my students in my classroom all day. I wanted to create something that they could do at school or home independently. I created a page on my website called "Chapter Book Enrichment," where I will create Google forms for students to respond to after reading assigned chapters. I initially created a spreadsheet but then reconsidered after Michael brought up the fact that a student could easily erase another's work whether intentionally or unintentionally. Plus, I like how I can imbed the form right on the webpage so there is less clicking and confusion. The directions and expectations will always be right above the Google form so that there is no confusion. I plan to use this format for all of the enrichment chapter books we read in second grade. I will embed the new forms about twice each week. I am really excited to try this next fall and I believe that it will be a huge motivator for my students. Here is a link to my webpage:

https://sites.google.com/a/apps.edina.k12.mn.us/mrs-jansen-s-classroom/chapter-book-enrichment

This project really helped me grow in the area of designing and developing a digital-age learning experience and assessment. With the little time that I had to devote to my chapter book enrichment groups, I was never 100% sure that they were understanding the stories and truly growing in their reading. With this tool, students can manage their own learning by responding to what they have read. I will in turn have a running record of how they are interpreting the stories, their predictions, summaries, evaluations, and the questions they have. I will more readily be able to talk with them about their progress. This project has also helped me engage in professional growth and leadership. I have shared my Google forms with my team and we have already discussed other ways that we can use digital-age learning tools to assess students. Not only are they motivating for students, but they are easily manageable for teachers. I will strive to continue to reflect on digital tools and incorporate them into my teaching as much as possible.
Teaching & Technology Cohorthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10916857075163362778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869245602789284992.post-82295743301568715992011-06-12T13:32:00.000-07:002011-08-22T06:44:01.682-07:00Sue Engen's 20% Project 2In my 20% Project I have continued my pledge to implement technology into my life. A big step this week was the tossing of the cassette tapes (gasp!) so that I start next year with my new iPod. For years all listening activities in my Spanish classes have been recorded on cassette tape and when students need to make up a test they sit down at the 1960's cassette machine and take the test. However in the past few years students don't even know how to turn on a cassette player. I'm not quite sure how I will do all this make up testing on the iPod; or I may even Screencast the directions like I used to record directions and test-taking advice on the cassette tapes. I don't know - maybe I need to talk to an integration specialist. Bottom line - there used to be an issue of panic when I thought about changing the way I do things. Now it seems to almost be the norm. Everything is different. I needed this course to make me see that technology isn't evil. It's hard, but I'm happy with the changes.

And I have lots of changes. I'm on Moodle and my 7th graders will start the year off in Spanish 1B, a Moodle course, and take a 15 point Moodle quiz on review verbs with feedback. (thanks Claude!) This summer I plan to try to add at least one Moodle quiz to each 1B chapter. I've bookmarked so much stuff that at this point my bookmarks are like my basement - I'm not really sure what's down there, but I've used quite a few of the grammar YouTube bookmarks and they bring a nice twist to class. I'll get that organized this summer. I used computers in my classroom and had students send me Voki projects via Google Docs. Mike helped me to see how I can have kids write about their Service Project reading buddies using Picasa. I just learned how to use Google e-mail today as I wait for my collaboration group to get back to me. There's always something to learn. Biggest lesson: Do what I can with the technology and don't sweat what doesn't happen. I'll get there at my own pace. Thanks Ed Fund for the financial help. It was an incentive.
Let me count the ways!!! Hey,I I'm even not minding the sound of my own voice. Here are the reasons I love screen casting and engaged in all things screen-cast-o-matic for my 20% project.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">1. I love the fact that I can inject my personality into a presentation. You know, I don't take myself too seriously, and that's a good thing. I think people should be comfortable with who they are. I am passionate about kids and Edina, and success and RtI and technology and all things teaching and all things admin...but...I realize that I am but a human, flawed at best. I want people to know that I accept them for who they are but I will also expect great things from them. I just like the relational part that I think screen-casting brings.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">2. I love the fact that screen-casting is efficient. If someone misses a meeting or if I am creating a course or PBL...screen casting gets a lot of info to folks in an efficient, 21st century manner. Bravo!
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">3. It sure beats a boring old powerpoint.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">4. It sure beats a boring old Shawn in person!!
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">5. It plays to my creative side...I feel squelched sometimes in my data role...I am not a concrete-sequential type. I consider myself more a creative type, so this works for me.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Here are some of my latest creations...sorry, in advance, for being corny. I have done more...these are examples.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I thought about each final project that the students publish and I wanted to have a rubric for the students to use. I am really excited to use the rubrics next year and I know that I will probably make a few changes as integrate them into my teaching.
Using rubrics with the class allows us to have a conversation about what quality work really looks like. I think it also gives kids a much better understanding of the expectations and what they can do to meet the requirements. I have always known that rubrics are a good tool, but having the time to explore different sites and different rubrics that are already created gave me a better understanding of how I can tweak them to fit my classroom.

During this course I had a chance to think about the digital resources that are available to me as an educator. I spent some time looking at rubrics that were already created and then I changed them to fit my needs. I also had a chance to think about a problem based learning project for my students. It has been fun to think about how I can get my students more involved in their learning and how they can interact with each other. I think using Moodle is a fun way to have students share their thinking and it's a great way for students to learn from each other. This class has given me the chance to share ideas with other educators and to collaborate about how to make my classroom an even stronger place for learning.
We have had the opportunity to use Clickers for several years at Countryside, but I had never implemented them properly where they could be useful to our entire team. I decided to write a quiz for every theme in our Reading Series so I could assess our students more effectively on Vocabulary. I gave the quiz to the students and the best part was the Instructor Summary. This was a little printout tell me what percentage correct each student got and how many questions they answered. It was interesting because I had all of this data right at my fingertips. I could easily do report cards and form my instruction.
Another reason I loved the Clickers was because it highly engaged my students in each lesson. I decided to take it one step further and use them everyday in math for our math reflexes at the beginning of the lesson. The students couldn't wait for math to start each day!

We also spruced up our Health Unit at the end of the year and I gave quizes after each chapter. I loved this because I never had assessments for Health before!

Here is a link to the presentation I created so you can see what I did in my classroom!
The NETS*S Standards were implemented in the following ways:

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

The clickers are definitely a new learning experience and research has shown that they improve students achievement based on engagement and the immediate feedback that is available. I think I grew in the area because I am working smarter not harder. The students loved using them and I had data right at my fingertips!

<span lang="EN" style="color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">3.
