The idea of a 20% project was something I really liked trying for this class. I decided to implement my integrated unit as I was writing it for my 20%. I felt that implementing my project right away would motivate me to actually try the technology I was exploring. My integrated unit involved having students create and carryout a Literacy Campaign. In other words my students and I have worked and continue to work on researching literacy. Our goal is to come up with ways to educate others on the importance of literacy in order to increase “buy-in” for our all school reading day. By the end of April 2011 students will have completed the campaign in hopes to inspire others to appreciate reading more and practice reading often.
Overall my students were able to take what I modeled for them (responsible internet use, getting started with the technology explored in our campaign, trying a new form of technology, researching reliable content, and seeking various resources to complete a task) and create their own plan of action as they worked on educating others about literacy. The learning environment was and still is surrounded by technology as students were able and continue to explore and assess their own work throughout the unit thus highlighting the 2nd and 3rd NETS*T.
My final thoughts have given me some sense of contentment as a teacher striving to be current and effective in the 21st Century. I definitely feel that I have grown as a professional. I am an on-going learner leading other on-going learners as we swim in this world of changing technology. Overall I am confident my students are getting the experience they need to refine and establish a skill set necessary for them to be relevant once their time with me comes to a close. Staying involved and engaged in courses like this is what allows me to see myself as a relevant resource in my students’ education and in turn demonstrates my ability to meet the 5th NETS*T.
